Yoga and Meditation as a Health Intervention

Indigenous traditions such as Yoga and Meditation have been promoted by the Government of India increasingly as healthcare interventions. Department of Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) has been made an independent ministry to enhance governmental supports towards traditional healthcare interventions. This paper explores first contemporary positioning of yoga and meditation. It also finds some of the practices in the subcontinent, which exhibits the relationship between yogic and meditative traditions as healthcare provisions. Finally, it provides the popular experiences, how yoga and meditation become part of health and wellbeing practices. It is found that apart from Governmental supports, there are private initiatives too in these indigenous traditions. The area of indigenous traditions is established as a fertile area of in depth research.
